Welcome to Birch Class
During the morning Year 5 pupils (aged 9-10) are taught in a small single age group for Literacy and Numeracy. In Literacy lessons and Guided Reading sessions children develop their reading skills by reading a wide range of fictions and non-fiction texts. In writing emphasis is placed on the use of appropriate structure for different genres, whilst developing language skills such as: vocabulary, sentence structure and spelling. In Numeracy we build upon the number skills attained in previous years and provide children with lots of opportunities to apply these to problem solving and investigations.
In the afternoon the class becomes a larger mixed age class of Year 4 and 5. During these afternoon sessions skills in Science, History, Geography, Art and DT are developed through the topic for the term. Topics studied include: Castles, Chocolate, Rainforests and Romans. What pupils learn depends on their prior knowledge and their interests. They are encouraged to apply skills acquired within Literacy and Numeracy lessons to their topic work. PE and RE are taught weekly.
Homework is set each week for Literacy, Numeracy, Topic and spellings. Parents are encouraged to support their child in completing tasks and ensure they are returned to school on time.
