ICT is an essential resource to support learning and teaching, as well as playing an important role in the everyday lives of children, young people and adults. Consequently, we need to use these technologies in order to prepare our pupils for the future. However, we must ensure our children use them safely.
e-Safety involves pupils, staff, governors and parents ensuring that we create and maintain a safe online and ICT environment for pupils at Wootton Wawen CE Primary School.
Tips for Parents
- Talk to your child about safety online. It's important to start talking to your child about keeping safe online at an early age. Talking about online safety little and often is better than trying to cover everything at once.
- Explore on line together. Find out what sites they visit and what they love about them, if they know you understand they are more likely to come to you if they have any problems.
- Set boundaries. It's useful to agree on some ground rules together. These will depend on your child's age and what you feel is right for them, but you might want to consider:
- the amount of time they can spend online
- when they can go online
- the websites they can visit or activities they can take part in
- sharing images and videos
- how to treat people online and not post anything they wouldn't say face-to-face.
If your child plays online games:
- check the age rating before they play
- make sure you know who they're playing with
- talk to them about what information is OK to share with other players
- agree on the amount of time they spend playing online games
Keep all equipment that connects to the internet in a family space. For children of primary school age, it is important to keep internet use in family areas so you can see the sites your child is using and be there for them if they stumble across something they don’t want to see.
Use parental controls on devices that link to the internet, such as the TV, laptops, computers, games consoles and mobile phones. Parental controls are a tool to help you set appropriate boundaries as your child grows and develops. Service providers are working hard to make them simple, effective and user friendly.
