Aims
-
- As part of our curriculum we want to ensure that our learners have a shared respect for what makes our school community special within the context of what being a responsible member of the world beyond them means.
- Our RE curriculum comprises of a mixture of the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus and the Understanding Christianity scheme. By using both, we ensure that our pupils gain a deep and contextual understanding of Christianity whilst also being able to learn about other religions in detail. This enables them to recognise similarities and differences between religions and their beliefs.
- Our PSHE scheme (Jigsaw) ensures all lessons are mapped against the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. All Jigsaw lessons contribute to one or more of these values in some way.
1.3 We value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all our pupils and their families, recognising and celebrating them when possible, whilst also reinforcing to our children what it means to be ‘British’.
1.4 This is covered by reinforcing our curriculum themes, which have strong links to the Geography and History of Britain and the wider world, from which our children learn tolerance and respect for all.
1.5 We celebrate national events that reflect important landmarks in shaping our nation.
1.6 We will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
1.7 Our school has collective worship on a daily basis which uphold traditional values of empathy, respect, tolerance and reflect the Christian ethos.
1.8 Our school’s Bible verse taken from Corinthian 12:12-27 indicates that here at Wootton Wawen C of E Primary School, we believe that we are one body made up of many parts – that is to say that regardless of religion, race, culture or beliefs, we are all equally integral to making our school community and wider community work.
2. Democracy
2.1 Democracy is core to our school ethos.
2.2 Children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through class representatives on the school council.
2.3 We also promote democracy through our collective worships and through focus days linked to our curriculum.
2.4 Elections for any representative council are undertaken in each class where every child has a vote.
2.5 Children are always encouraged to express their opinions and we foster an environment where children are safe to disagree with each other.
3. The Rule of Law
3.1 The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced in our expectations throughout every day.
3.2 The school’s ‘SMART Behaviour’ is displayed in each class and around the school and is reinforced by all members of staff.
3.3 We use a restorative approach to behaviour, whereby children are taught to take ownership and responsibility for their own actions and have input into the rewards or sanctions they will experience as a result.
4. Individual Liberty
4.1 Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices about their learning and their behaviour.
4.2 Through pupil discussions and reflections we encourage the children to develop a vocabulary to talk about their learning and their behaviour.
4.3 We provide children with the opportunities to make choices in a safe environment. Children are encouraged to know and understand their personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely through, for example, e-safety discussions, class and whole school assemblies and extra-curricular activities.
5. Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
5.1 We enhance pupil’s understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society by celebrating the range of rich cultural heritages we have in school, in the local community, in Wootton Wawen C of E Primary School and in Great Britain.
5.2 We celebrate the richness of our culturally diverse school population through RE lessons, collective worship, through music, dance and art.
5.3 Children of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning and discover similar themes in their religions to Christianity such as Charity.
5.4 As a school, we support many charities and national fund raising events and these are discussed during collective worship.
5.5 PSHE, RE and collective worship stimulate discussions around prejudices and prejudice based bullying. Within our curriculum, opportunities exist to challenge prejudice.
5.6 Children visit our church, learning stories from the Christian faith and how to promote Christian values. We also study in RE places of worship from other religions, spiritual leaders, customs and traditions to help learners understand similarities and differences to the Christian faith and understand tolerance and respect for different customs. We celebrate differences in faith, customs and beliefs during events such as Multi-Cultural Week and Empathy Week.
5.7 We welcome the opportunity to learn about other faiths first-hand, through visiting places of worship and inviting visitors to speak to and work with the children.
