Forest School at Wootton Wawen Primary
Here at Wootton, our Forest School program offers children the opportunity to learn, explore, and grow through hands-on experiences in a natural outdoor environment. Taking place in our dedicated Forest school area, sessions are designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and develop resilience.
Led by a trained Forest School practitioner, children engage in a wide range of activities—from den building and climbing to nature crafts and wildlife observation. These experiences not only support physical and emotional well-being but also encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.
Forest School is an integral part of our curriculum, helping children to thrive beyond the classroom and connect meaningfully with the world around them.
In an ever-increasing digital world Forest school allows the children to reconnect with nature and their environment. There are many benefits of being outdoors and forest school can help children to develop the following,
???? 1. Builds Confidence and Self-Esteem
Forest School encourages children to take supported risks in a natural setting, helping them to overcome challenges and build belief in their abilities.
???? 2. Enhances Mental Health and Wellbeing
Time in nature has proven benefits for reducing stress and anxiety. Forest School offers a calm, restorative environment that supports emotional regulation and resilience.
????️ 3. Develops Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
Through open-ended play and exploration—like building shelters or navigating trails—children learn to plan, adapt, and think creatively.
???? 4. Encourages Teamwork and Communication
Activities often involve collaboration, which strengthens social skills, cooperation, and empathy.
✋ 5. Improves Physical Development
Climbing, balancing, digging, and carrying all help to build gross and fine motor skills, supporting overall physical health.
???? 6. Fosters a Connection with Nature
Regular time outdoors helps children develop a respect and love for the environment, nurturing future custodians of the planet.
???? 7. Supports Cross-Curricular Learning
Forest School naturally links to science, maths, literacy, art, and geography, offering real-world contexts that deepen understanding.
???? 8. Promotes Independence and Risk Awareness
Children learn to assess and manage risks safely, helping them become more self-reliant and responsible.
